Latest state of the art
(pug) Since 2012, the buildings of the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of G枚ttingen have been gradually renovated. After the chemical storage, workshop building, and Building E with lecture halls, learning areas, and provisional laboratory spaces, the renovation of Building H as a modern laboratory building is now complete. Since this semester, all practical areas of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry and the Institute of Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry are located there.

Precisely arranging nanoparticles
Research team at G枚ttingen University develops plasmonic molecules from nanoparticles. In the incredibly small world of molecules, the elementary building blocks 鈥� the atoms 鈥� join together in a very regular pattern. In contrast, in the macroscopic world with its larger particles, there is much greater disorder when particles connect. A research team at the University of G枚ttingen has now succeeded in achieving the same precise arrangement of atoms shown in molecules, but using nanometer-sized particles, known as 鈥減lasmonic molecules鈥� 鈥� combinations of nanoscale metallic structures that have unique properties.

Innovative: Electrochemical Molecule Synthesis Coupled with Hydrogen Production
Green hydrogen is considered the clean energy carrier of the future: it can be produced in a decentralized manner using renewable energy sources such as solar or wind energy without the release of climate-harming carbon dioxide. Researchers at the University of G枚ttingen are actively working on systems in which electrochemical hydrogen production is coupled with the conversion of carbon-hydrogen bonds. In the past, rare metals were used as catalysts to control the progress of such reactions. In a new process, however, inexpensive cobalt is used as the catalyst.

Transition phase Start of studies
Starting a course of study is an important step in life, also in chemistry. We provide intensive support for our new students and are developing digital tools, advisory services and low-threshold networks in two projects. These help students get off to a successful start in their studies, but are also there to help them if, after a while, their studies turn out not to be a suitable path after all and they need to look for alternatives in the world of chemistry.

New methods: faster, safer, greener - Chemist from the University of G枚ttingen receives ERC Advanced Grant
Professor of Chemistry, Lutz Ackermann from G枚ttingen University has received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). The ERC will fund his project "Electrochemical Bond Functionalization (ElectroFun)" for five years with an award of around 2.5 million euros.

Clever biomolecular labelling enables identification of immune cells
Biomolecules regulate the biological functions inside every living cell. If scientists can understand the molecular mechanisms of such functions, then it is possible to detect severe dysfunction which can lead to illness. At a molecular level, this can be achieved with fluorescent markers that are specifically incorporated into the respective biomolecules. In the past, this has been achieved by incorporating a marker in the biomolecule by completely rebuilding it from the beginning, necessitating a large number of steps.

Mit chemischen Verbindungen zu neuen Formen der Krebstherapie
Die M枚glichkeit, zwei Peptide miteinander zu verkn眉pfen, ist eine besonders effiziente Methode zur Synthese multifunktionaler Biomolek眉le. Konventionell wird dies bislang durch mehrstufige Verfahren der Peptidherstellung erreicht, was jedoch sehr zeit- und ressourcenintensiv ist. Forscherinnen und Forscher der Universit盲t und der Universit盲tsmedizin G枚ttingen haben nun einen ressourcenschonenden Ansatz entwickelt, der Zugang zu Molek眉len mit neuen biologischen Aktivit盲ten gegen Krebszelllinien erm枚glicht. Die Ergebnisse sind in der Fachzeitschrift Science Advances erschienen.

Neue Wege zur passgenauen Medikamentenherstellung
Die Modifizierung von Peptiden ist von gro脽em Wert insbesondere f眉r die Entwicklung von Wirkstoffen und Medikamenten. Bisherige Erfolge durch die Aktivierung reaktionstr盲ger Kohlenstoff-Wasserstoff-Bindungen zielten zumeist auf die Bildung neuer Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Bindungen. Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler unter Leitung der Universit盲t G枚ttingen haben nun einen alternativen Ansatz gefunden.

Erstmals bietet die Fakult盲t f眉r Chemie ein Schnupperpraktikum speziell f眉r Studieninteressierte mit beruflicher Vorbildung an. An den beiden Wochenenden 16. und 17. sowie 23. und 24. April 2021 lernen die Teilnehmenden in einer virtuellen Veranstaltung Inhalte und Organisation des Chemiestudiums kennen.

Funding for network
The European Social Fund and the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony will support the project "Training Compass Chemistry - Designing Sustainable Transitions" from April 1, 2020. The Faculty of Chemistry is increasingly networking with local companies and educational actors to support chemical laboratory assistants who want to study chemistry and vice versa students who want to switch to a more practice-oriented education. In the network, accompanying consulting tools and reliable recognition channels for services rendered are to be developed.

" Chemikerinnen und Chemiker der Universit盲t G枚ttingen haben ein neues Medikament f眉r die Antik枚rper-Tumortherapie entwickelt. Dem Forschungsteam gelang es, das Naturprodukt Duocarmycin so zu ver盲ndern, dass es seine Wirkung erst bei Ankunft in der Tumorzelle entfaltet und auf dem Weg dorthin durch den menschlichen K枚rper nur wenig giftig wirkt.

How nitrogen is transferred by a catalyst
Catalysts with a metal-nitrogen bond can transfer nitrogen to organic molecules. In this process short-lived molecular species are formed, whose properties critically determine the course of the reaction and product formation. The key compound in a catalytic nitrogen-atom transfer reaction has now been analysed in detail by chemists at the University of G枚ttingen and Goethe University Frankfurt.

F枚rderung f眉r Lehramtsausbildung
Der Fonds der Chemischen Industrie (FCI) f枚rdert ein Projekt des Chemiedidaktikers Prof. Dr. Thomas Waitz zur Entwicklung digitaler Kompetenzen in der Lehramtsausbildung Chemie. In Zusammenarbeit von Fachwissenschaft und Fachdidaktik werden digitale Unterrichtskonzepte entwickelt und am Sch眉lerlabor XLAB erprobt. Mit der FCI-F枚rderung wird der Ausbau der Experimentalsammlung mit modernen digitalen Medien, Instrumenten und Werkzeugen unterst眉tzt.

The Old Chemical Laboratory of the University of G枚ttingen in the Hospital Street has been awarded as 鈥淗istoric Chemical Landmark鈥� on 17 October 2019 within the program of the German Chemical Society (GDCh).

Bindungsf盲higer als erwartet
Graphen wird als au脽ergew枚hnlicher Werkstoff gefeiert. Es besteht aus reinem Kohlenstoff und ist nur eine einzige Atomlage d眉nn. Dennoch ist es enorm stabil und sogar leitf盲hig. F眉r die Elektronik allerdings hat Graphen entscheidende Nachteile: Denn noch ist es nicht als Halbleiter einsetzbar. Wasserstoff-Atome auf Graphen k枚nnten dies 盲ndern. Forscherinnen und Forscher aus G枚ttingen und Pasadena (USA) haben jetzt sichtbar gemacht, wie Wasserstoff- und Kohlenstoff-Atome des Graphens chemisch binden und was dabei passiert. Die Ergebnisse sind in der Fachzeitschrift Science erschienen.

Research Prize for Chemists at the University of G枚ttingen
The chemist Prof. Dr. Lutz Ackermann from the University of G枚ttingen has been awarded in the "Century Project" competition by the Werner Siemens Foundation (WSS). Ackermann's team and five others have received a research prize of over one million euros each for their ideas. The award ceremony took place on Friday, June 16, 2023, in Lucerne.
